What are the most common senior health issues?

The answer to that question can vary depending on what source you use. It can also vary in your own case as we age and have a family history of a certain conditions or diseases.

However, what doesn’t change or vary are some facts and numbers about seniors and the baby boomer population that most of us are in.

Baby Boomers

According to the 2014 Data form the U. S. Census Bureau, there were 76 million births in the United States between the years 1946 and 1964—the baby boomer years.

It is estimated that about 11 million have died, leaving 65.2 million baby boomers just like us.

The Golden years we are now in is even getting better with several new advances in medicine each and every year.

It is estimated that by the year 2030, 20% of the U. S population will be 65 years or older, and that is just the United States.

The average life expectancy for women is now over 80 years of age, and in men it is 75 years.

Again, this is just in the United States, and in several parts of the world it is even higher.

However, even with these numbers, the common senior health issues are not going away.

It is for this reason that we need to eat the right food, and keep mentally and physically as sharp as we can.

The Most Common Senior Health Issues

The most common senior health will be broken down into two groups.

The first group includes the following.

  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
  • Memory related problems

 There can be little arguments that Osteoporosis is indeed one of the most common senior health issues for one simple reason; the replacement factor.

As we age, our bodies are slowing down and our bones are not reproducing like they used to.

In fact, we are beginning to absorb more old bone tissue each and every day and replacing fewer, and because of this, they are becoming both thinner and not nearly as strong.

Osteoporosis is technically a disease where our bones become weak and brittle, and as a result, can break much easier as well as fracture by what used to be a normal impact they used to absorb.

The best way to prevent this from becoming an issue is to feed your bones the correct nutrients as we age.

Arthritis is next on the list of common senior health issues and it is estimated that 1 of every 3, (1/3) of all seniors suffers from this condition in some form.

However, it can also be controlled or prevented by the right diet.

Heart problems are next of the list of common senior health issues as our heart ages the same as you. Once it begins to age, it has to work harder to circulate our blood.

You are also more prone to strokes as you age, but like all parts of our body, you can also feed your heart and help maintain it through exercise and moderation in lifestyle.

Memory related issues are also a serious challenge as we age, and this can include mild cognitive impairment, dementia, sundowning, as well as Alzheimer’s disease.

Incontinence and constipation are also common issues.

Incontinence is the result of enlarged prostrates in men,which can be treated by the right diet and nutrition in most cases, but with women it is more challenging.

The Dangers of Pneumonia

Chronic constipation can also be tamed with the right diet and supplements in most cases.

Balance issues and ataxia can be the result of certain medications, but the major cause is inner ear infections. Diet and supplements can also help control these conditions.

The final of the common senior health issues is Pneumonia and the flu. Pneumonia is a severe threat and is often the result of smoking, but not in all cases.

It is something that as we age, we need to be extremely aware of as it is one of the leading killers in seniors.

Flu is highly contagious and can easily lead to Pneumonia, and while you can get a flu shot to prevent it, personally I am totally against flu shots for two reasons.

The first is that the last time I got one it made me sick, and the second is that my wife and I are convinced that this is what killed her mother.

We took her in at 76 years of age and became her caregiver. We battled several things in the 7 years we cared for her and in the last 4 years she was doing very, very well until she got a flu shot.

After the shot she died within 2 weeks. We have absolutely no proof of this other than from experience and watching her quit eating and drinking right after the shot.

In most cases these common senior health issues can be controlled by the right diet and nutrition as our body begins to age.
